When discussing website technology options with clients, we find that many people have deep misconceptions about “WordPress” and “custom development.”

As soon as some people hear WordPress, they think, “Isn’t that cheap website building where you buy a ready-made foreign template for a few hundred yuan, cram in thirty or forty plugins, and end up with a painfully slow site that hackers infect every day?” Others hear that an outsourcing company has “hand-coded an exclusive CMS backend from scratch” in PHP or Java and assume it must be sophisticated. Then, six months after launch, the developer who wrote it leaves. The marketing team wants to change the order of a section or add an SEO canonical tag, only to find that the custom backend is so rudimentary that even rich-text formatting frequently loses its styles. Nobody else wants to take over the undocumented legacy code.

These problems arise from confusing “which backend core is used” with “whether the frontend has an original custom design.” In actual [website development and design implementation](https://www.jvds.cn/en/service/website-development), the market offers **three distinctly different development models**:

## A Candid Comparison of Three Website Development Models

| Comparison dimension | Model One: A ready-made commercial WordPress theme (low-end template site) | Model Two: Original UI design + custom development on a clean WordPress core | Model Three: Modern full-stack custom development (Next.js / Nuxt + a headless CMS or custom backend) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| **Design fidelity and distinctiveness** | **Extremely low**: Restricted by a ready-made theme framework, even layout changes require piecing things together with a drag-and-drop plugin (Elementor), making it easy to look like competitors | **100% original**: Designers first create a bespoke design in Figma, then frontend engineers hand-code native HTML/CSS/JS, using WP solely as the content management backend | **100% original**: Frontend and backend are completely decoupled, suitable for sites with complex three-dimensional interactions, real-time calculators, extensive product selection libraries, or membership systems |
| **Code cleanliness and loading speed** | **Extremely poor**: Drag-and-drop builders generate more than a dozen redundant nested `<div>` layers, and after installing 20 plugins, the initial screen often takes over 5 seconds to load | **Excellent**: No bloated drag-and-drop plugins; clean custom fields (ACF) are written only as needed, and static caching delivers the initial screen within 1 second | **Outstanding**: Supports server-side rendering (SSR) and static site generation (SSG), distribution through global edge nodes, and extremely high concurrent capacity |
| **Security and resistance to attacks** | **Vulnerable**: Heavy use of free third-party plugins from unknown sources makes the site highly susceptible to hidden-link injection through plugin vulnerabilities | **Robust**: Redundant plugins are disabled, the admin path is hidden or protected by an IP allowlist/two-factor authentication, and the frontend outputs purely static content | **Financial-grade robustness**: Frontend static assets are physically isolated from backend database APIs, leaving virtually no risk of traditional injection attacks |
| **Routine maintenance and handover costs** | Initially seems inexpensive at a few thousand yuan, but later changes become impossible and upgrades cause the site to break | **A globally adopted standard**: Publishing through the backend is effortless for marketing teams, and any developer worldwide who understands PHP/frontend development can seamlessly take over maintenance | Requires a technical team familiar with modern Node.js / React / Vue build and deployment practices, or managed operations and maintenance by the developer |

## Which Model Should Your Company Choose?

1. **Firmly avoid “Model One (drag-and-drop plugins with a template)”**: If an agency quotes twenty or thirty thousand yuan for a custom corporate website but secretly uses Elementor/Divi with a ready-made theme to deliver it, that is money particularly badly spent.
2. **Mid-sized and large brand websites, and independent B2B websites targeting overseas markets (focused on content, case studies, and inquiries)**: “Model Two (an original custom frontend + a streamlined, customized CMS core)” offers the best value, combining a completely unique brand identity and clean SEO code with an exceptionally mature, easy-to-use backend for publishing articles and products.
3. **Sites with complex online business interactions, permissions shared across multiple subsidiaries, or technology portals with high concurrency**: Choose “Model Three (a modern frontend framework such as Next.js + a structured backend)” to leave sufficient technical room for future business system expansion.
