With Many Website Optimization Issues, How Do You Choose the First Round of Changes?

Author: JVDS Design Studio Reading time: about 4 min

When there are many website optimization issues, prioritize tasks customers cannot complete, clearly incorrect public information and failed key entry points, then schedule experience and visual improvements. Priorities need impact, evidence and implementation dependencies. This helps owners of existing business websites avoid mixing different kinds of opinions into an unordered task list.

Rewrite Opinions as Reproducible Problems

The website looks unattractive or customers do not understand it is not yet actionable. Ask the person raising the issue for the page, device, steps and actual result. Cannot find the download entry after opening a product page on mobile is easier to locate than poor mobile experience and allows a check that the change resolves it.

Separate observations from guesses. Sales staff noticing repeated questions about suitability is an observable pattern; believing an animation will reduce inquiries is a proposal requiring validation. Preserve the observation before discussing causes, so unchecked solutions do not crowd the first round.

Without user interviews or visit data, staff can retrace core tasks internally. Clearly label this an internal check: a few colleagues' experiences cannot stand for all customers' behavior. Important questions need more evidence later.

Set Priorities Using Task Impact and Dependencies

First identify which task each issue affects: finding information, understanding conditions, comparing options, contacting the company or updating content. Specify the reach, such as one old product page or every mobile contact entry. This is more explanatory than arbitrary scores for each issue.

Then check whether it can be fixed directly. Incorrect contact details can usually be clearly corrected once accurate information is available; confused product categories may require business agreement first; failed form notifications need developers and email administrators to investigate together. Do not promise immediate completion for an apparently simple issue with unresolved dependencies.

Use four arrangements: immediately address verified blockers; complete materials before changing pages; test experience proposals on a small scale; and hold unnecessary decoration as future candidates. Each arrangement needs an owner and completion conditions. An important label cannot replace a plan.

Suppose a company requests new colors across the site and also finds that its mobile form cannot be filled in correctly. The first round can restore the form journey while recording the color objective and audience evidence. Visual changes remain open for discussion, but their assessment conditions should be recorded separately from the interaction fault.

Make the First Round a Complete Scope

The first round need not solve everything; it can combine related work around one goal. Improving product information discovery may involve catalog names, detail explanations and related links. Renaming navigation while leaving mismatched content may still prevent task completion.

When discussing website optimization with JVDS Design Studio, provide issue records and priority tasks, then agree on page, content and development scope. Redesign, maintenance and performance work depend on project conditions; the term optimization alone does not imply every service.

Keep representative pages and task records before execution, then retest under the same conditions afterward. Record what was resolved, remaining limits and new issues that need separate entries. New discoveries should not automatically expand the scope; first confirm whether they affect this round's goal.

Success means every first round item has a clear problem, action and verification method, key dependencies have owners and repaired customer journeys work end to end. Adjust priorities later as new evidence emerges, making optimization manageable ongoing work. See How to continuously optimize the corporate website after it goes live? A truly mature website is not just delivered but enters a data-driven iterative cycle for related checks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can You Choose the First Round Without Traffic Data?

Start with clear accuracy and usability issues, such as wrong contact information, broken links and obscured mobile content. Mark judgments about user preferences or business outcomes as pending validation, and add interviews or observations later rather than treating internal opinions as customer conclusions. See How to Measure Whether a Website Redesign Worked: Build a Measurement Plan Beyond Post-Launch Traffic for related checks.

Should the Cheapest and Easiest Changes Come First?

Ease of implementation is a scheduling factor but cannot replace impact assessment. A small change that repairs an important entry deserves priority; many easy decorative changes may scatter resources. Establish task impact first, then consider whether effort and dependencies allow progress.
