How to Design a UI Users Come to Rely On

UI is short for User Interface. UI design covers the overall design of human-computer interaction, operating logic, and interface aesthetics in software. Good UI design is not only attractive and distinctive; more importantly, it feels comfortable and flexible, making the software easy and natural to use.

As the medium through which people interact with machines, UI design must consider how to make operations more flexible, interfaces more memorable, and the user experience stronger. So how can we design a UI that users come to rely on?

Use Real-World Interaction Patterns

What does it mean to simulate a real-world interaction? It means creating a human-computer experience that feels familiar and intuitive, so users can understand it without learning. A small flashlight APP, for example, may simulate a physical flashlight. Users do not need to think about how it works because the pattern is already familiar. A good application is one that people can use freely the first time they encounter it, without training.

Create a Simple, Clear Interface

Unlike visually dramatic poster design, interface design places greater emphasis on experience. The interface is a tool for users, and usability is the first quality any tool should have. UI design should avoid unnecessary decoration that interferes with users' tasks. To keep the interface clean, less important features can be hidden appropriately, provided users can still find them through an effective method.

Icon Design

① Using familiar, widely recognized icons helps users understand the interface quickly and makes it feel approachable.

② New icons that capture the software's distinctive characteristics can communicate personality and differentiation while making the product more memorable, lively, and energetic and improving the user experience.

③ Clean, concise icon design is more consistent with interface aesthetics. A strong icon should be distinctive and approachable while helping the interface remain uncluttered.

Color Design

For color combinations, using no more than three colors is a foundational principle. Even with the same colors, different proportions and placements produce different emotional effects.

① Prioritize black, white, and gray. When no strong color scheme is available, black, white, and gray are the best choice. If paired well, they can also create a clear visual hierarchy.

② Add one color to enliven the monotony of black, white, and gray. Introducing a small amount of color into a predominantly neutral palette breaks the monotony while keeping the composition elegant and energetic.

③ Build combinations within a single color family. When using color, keeping a page within one family helps prevent visual inconsistency.

④ Use complementary colors. With the right proportions, complementary combinations can also produce excellent visual results.

⑤ Use analogous colors. When one color has high saturation, pair it with another color that has lower saturation or brightness for a stronger result. These are only basic color-combination principles, but beginners who apply them can still produce effective interface design.

Language Design

① Use language consistently. Describe the same thing with the same term to avoid unnecessary confusion. For example, if the interface uses “Find,” do not use “Search” in the same situation.

② Use precise language. Avoid ambiguity and do not make users stop to interpret the message.

③ Use plain language. Avoid technical jargon whenever possible. Remember that the software is built for a broad user base, not for the technical specialists who created it.

④ Show care through language. Avoid unfriendly words such as “Warning” and “Prohibited” where possible. Consider friendlier phrasing such as “Helpful reminder” or “Please do not...” along with appropriate contemporary online language.

Overall, interface language should make users feel welcomed, comfortable, and at ease.
