We have devoted considerable attention to the functional layer of technology while giving its emotional dimension less thought. Technology continues to enter every aspect of our lives. Intelligent emotional interactions with devices are shaping the future of mobile technology.

Emotionally intelligent design has established itself as one of the leading principles and practices in mobile UX design. It is not simply about evoking emotion, but about considering emotion in its distinct forms throughout every interaction with technology.

How can we use technology to design connections that stand apart on an emotional level? Let us draw on the characteristics of emotional intelligence to create a meaningful approach to emotional design that goes beyond delight.

Emotional Intelligence: A New Meaning

According to Google, emotional intelligence is the ability to perceive, control, and express one's emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships wisely and compassionately.

Recent technological advances, however, have made it possible to incorporate emotion recognition into mobile applications. This gives the concept of emotional intelligence a new meaning. Artificial intelligence (AI) and emotionally intelligent technologies are working together to shape future mobile experiences.

Why Do Emotions Matter in Business?

Emotional intelligence is one of the most important foundations of how we communicate with others. You may not notice it, but we use it almost everywhere, from ordering pizza to communicating with our loved ones.

How, then, can we ignore something that has such a powerful influence on people, especially in business? Everyone in marketing understands the role emotion plays in selling. Emotion implemented through design can profoundly affect users and help your mobile app stand out. Remember: we design for people, and we design for the entire experience.

To create such a product, you need to know how to find the right application developers and designers to help you build lasting relationships with users. You also need to understand the incremental costs involved in application development and the considerations required to manage those costs.

How Can Emotional Intelligence Be Integrated into UX Design?

Our devices are becoming more sophisticated. They collect and analyze data from inputs such as cameras, audio, and physical sensors, then use AI technology to detect emotions.

Emotionally Intelligent UX Can Be Divided into Three Key Areas:

Natural language processing

Facial expression recognition

Physical signal analysis

People have always wanted to communicate with technology more naturally. Recent advances in NLP (natural language processing) have made this possible. We are talking about a new type of UI: the conversational interface. It brings conversation and emotion together.

Today, the market offers two primary types of conversational interfaces: chatbots and voice user interfaces.

More Than Chatbots

A new generation of chatbots has emerged, powered by artificial neural networks capable of recognizing speech patterns.

One strong example of this technology is Xiaoice, an advanced NLP chatbot developed by Microsoft and, at the time, available only in the Chinese market. It can use sentiment analysis and adjust its phrasing and responses according to positive or negative speech cues from people similar to the user.

The Xiaoice application can learn and remember details from previous conversations and reuse them later. It has already been used by more than 40 million people.

An important capability that sets Xiaoice apart from competitors is its ability to recognize emotions in text. The chatbot can respond with empathy and sensitivity. When you interact with the application, it offers suggestions that were not explicitly programmed in advance. What makes the conversation exciting is the new language it learns.

Voice Analysis

Yes, robots can understand how you feel by analyzing your tone of voice. Moodies Emotions Analytics, developed by Beyond Verbal, is one of the best-known applications for identifying emotion from vocal tone.

It can listen to a real-time conversation while decoding a range of emotions. This type of application can take interface and user interaction to a higher level.

Facial Expression Recognition

Facial expressions are among the most powerful tools people use to express themselves. Facial recognition is mainly used by social networks to detect friends automatically in photographs. It can also be highly useful when creating emotionally intelligent design.

Consider how Facebook applies emotional intelligence in its design. The Like option expanded into a range of reactions, allowing users to share their feelings explicitly while also providing designers and marketers with emotional data.

Of course, this technology raises many privacy concerns. If companies and third parties use this emotional information, people may feel that their privacy has been invaded. Even so, facial expression recognition continues to be integrated into different technologies, creating new approaches to UX/UI design.

Today's technology does more than interpret our emotions. You may be surprised to learn that your mobile device can act as a personal coach and help you pursue emotional well-being. Imagine your phone understanding your stress level and offering suggestions for managing it.

Two types of products on the market use sensors to read pulse, blood pressure, and skin temperature to identify emotions: smart bands and wristbands. Remarkably, they can make recommendations based on how you feel.

Why Must Design Respect Emotion?

More data about our emotions does not necessarily create a better technology experience. As we work to create truly effective emotionally intelligent design, we will face many challenges that change how we think about design.

Designers today tend to focus on functionality. Designing for emotion requires a different approach. Technology is moving toward a future in which product designers increase their overall sensitivity to emotion by collecting data, mapping it to emotional states, and evoking those emotions in different ways. This will help creators understand how people feel when using their products while ensuring that design respects users' emotions.
